After you clear customs, our representative will meet you in the arrival area.
Delhi stands as the capital of Modern India. Here you can see the mingling of the Old and New India, the ancient and the modern. Delhi is made up of seven ancient cities, spanning the period from the 11th to 20th centuries. Delhi has seen the rise and fall of many emperors, which has left behind a plethora of monuments that commemorate the grandeur and glory of bygone ages.
Hotel: The Claridges
Day 2: Delhi
Full day tour of Old and New Delhi
Full Old Delhi had been the capital of Mughal India between the 12th and 19th centuries. At the famous Red Fort, where Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled the flag of newly independent India on August 15, 1947, you trade the vehicle for a bicycle rickshaw and weave through the narrow, winding lanes of the colorful and bustling Chandni Chowk, one of India’s oldest bazaars. Visit Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s serene and evocative cremation site; and see the 17th century Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India and Shah Jahan’s last architectural triumph. Along the way the whole family spends a little time with friendly pigeon racers. The sport of pigeon racing is a relic of the British Raj kept alive in Old Delhi and other parts of India by a stalwart group of enthusiasts, some of whom keep as many as 200 pigeons. Later you may opt to stop in at Delhi’s main Sikh temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib.
As a complete contrast to Old Delhi, New Delhi was designed and built by the British in the 1920's. It's a city of wide boulevards impressive government buildings, green parks and gardens. In 1911 King George V announced the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to Delhi. The King's architects, Lutyens and Baker, set in motion the design and construction of Delhi's eighth city, New Delhi. Lutyens designed an "Imperial City" having palatial sized buildings set amid broad tree lined avenues punctuated by Mughal style gardens, complete with fountains and shallow pools.
You will visit two monuments from Delhi’s past; Humayun’s tomb and Qutub Minar the 12th century tower of victory built by a slave king and prototype of all minars (towers) in India. You will drive past the India Gate, a memorial raised in honor of the Indian soldiers martyred during the Afghan war and a drive along the Rajpath past the Parliament House and Secretarial buildings and Presidential Palace, the one-time imperial residence of the British viceroys.
Optional:
See a Bollywood show at the Kingdom of Dreams (not included in trip price). India’s first state of the art 835 seat auditorium sporting cutting edge technology and visual effects is the Jewel in the Crown of the Kingdom, where an opulent, cinematic theatrical experience of the world’s biggest Bollywood long playing musical show is staged daily. Famous names from the Indian film industry collaborate to create this electrifying, onstage magnum opus spectacle. Duration of the movie is 2 ½ hours.
Hotel: The Claridges (B)
Day 3: Delhi – Agra (205 km/4 1/2hrs)
Saying goodbye to Delhi, you drive four and a half hours to Agra. En route you will stop at the Agra Bear Rescue Facility, a sanctuary for rescued “dancing bears.” For centuries the Kalandar nomadic tribe has been using inhumane methods of training captured sloth bears and having them perform for emperors and tourists. Thanks to the efforts Wildlife SOS, the conservation organization that operates the center, hundreds of bears have been rescued and the Kalandar people are being assisted in developing alternative ways to earn a living. After making some new furry friends, you head to your Agra hotel.
Agra, best known as the city of the world’s most famous monument of love, is situated along the banks of the River Yamuna and attracts thousands of visitors every day from all over the world, to visit the Taj Mahal, a seventh wonder of the world, built by the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
This afternoon there’s time to relax before your sunset visit to the Taj Mahal. Photographs do not adequately convey the legend, poetry and romance that shroud what Rabindranath Tagore calls “a teardrop on the cheek of time”.
In the evening, take a tuk-tuk to witness Indian heritage come alive with a fascinating show, “Mohabbat-e-Taj: The Saga of Love”, a dance drama spectacle, supported by audiovisual effects. The show narrates the story of the Taj Mahal and presents it in various shades and season.
Hotel: Radisson (B)
Day 4: Agra – Ranthambore (train)
If you’re up for an early wake-up call, you can return to the Taj Mahal to see it light up at sunrise. A horse carriage will take you to the gates, then you will return to have breakfast at the hotel. Afterward it’s off to Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site sure to delight travelers of all ages. The buildings within this sprawling fort complex represent the assimilation of different cultures, which was the mark of the Mughal period. From the fort, drive past Kinari Bazaar where some of the local artwork may have rubbed off on you in the form of henna tattoos. Henna, a flowering plant used to dye everything from skin to wool, has facilitated the traditional, often ceremonial brown and red body art in India for thousands of years.
After lunch at Bharatpur (included), take a train for about two hours through Rajasthan’s beautiful countryside to Sawai Madhopur (Departs at 1550 hours and arrives at 1802 hours) and transfer to your hotel.
Sawai Madhopur is home to Ranthambore National Park and the historic 10th century Ranthambore fortress that lies within the national park. The park itself is situated at the joining of the Vindhya Plateau and the Aravalli Hills, and is characterized by rocky plains and steep cliffs. It supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including around 30 tigers.
Hotel: Khem Vilas (B, L, D)
Day 5: Ranthambore
Spanning about 250 square miles, Ranthambore covers a variety of habitats, from lakes and rivers to deciduous forest and open bushland. Set off on a four- by -four with a naturalist to explore the park, on morning and afternoon game drives, looking out for tiger, spotted deer, barking deer, Nilgai and sloth bear, as well as marsh crocodile and python around the lakes. You may see woodland, ground and water birds, among them the rare red jungle fowl and many species of eagle.
You will visit the Ranthambhore School of Art that consists of painters from local villages. The main subjects of their paintings are the majestic tigers of Ranthambhore. The Ranthambhore School recruits students from the surrounding villages and towns. The aim is to keep the beautiful image of the tiger in the minds of everyone. This they feel in turn would create a positive feeling in people otherwise indifferent, or negative, regarding the importance of the tiger's survival and future conservation.
Hotel: Khem Vilas (B, L, D)
Day 6: Ranthambore – Samode (Jaipur) (Drive – 180 km / 4 hours)
After breakfast you are off across the semiarid landscape towards Samode, a village near Jaipur.
For the next two nights your home will be Samode Bagh in a royal tented cottage.
Enjoy a camel cart ride with a visit of Samode village. In Samode, while experiencing the aura of rural life, one can witness and understand the age - old traditions and cultures that have been followed by the Indian families for centuries. You can also interact with villagers to get to know more about the culture, their lifestyle and visit local craftsmen's home.
This evening, wear traditional Rajasthani costumes for a family photo shoot. You will learn the art of dressing in a Sari and Turban.
Sari is an outer garment worn chiefly by women in the Indian sub-continent, consisting of a length of lightweight cloth with one end wrapped about the waist to form a skirt and the other draped over the shoulder or covering the head. The sari is in popular culture an epitome of Indian culture. The sari signified the grace of Indian women.
A safa (turban) is more than just an item of headgear to protect the wearer from the sun's heat. By its shape color, and size, it tells you a great deal about the man, such as where he comes from, what he does for a living and his position in society. It was traditionally considered an essential part of man's clothing and to appear in public without one was a sign of grossly bad behavior. The color pattern and style of tying the turban vary according to community, religion, and even district. Thus it is said that the style or men's turban changes every 12 miles in Rajasthan. Turban tying is considered a fine art; men who have mastered it take great pride in the fact.
Hotel: Samode Bagh (B)
Day 7: Jaipur
Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan province is known for its arts and crafts, jewelry, hand-painted fabrics and stone sculptures; its old town is one of North India’s finest examples of a planned city embodying the best of Rajput and Mughal architecture.
Your Jaipur exploration today begins on a hillside outside of town at Amer Fort. Known for its artistic style, blending both Hindu Rajput elements, the fort has large ramparts, a series of gates and cobbled paths, and overlooks Maota Lake.
In the afternoon visit the City Palace Museum where you can see an imposing blend of traditional Rajasthani and Mughal Art. The museum is resplendent with its collection of robes of royal princes, carpets, an armory of old weapons, miniature paintings portraying court scenes, battle scenes and processions. Near by is the awe inspiring Jantar Mantar (an accurate observatory built in 1726 AD) which still captures the imagination of people young and old. Also included is a photo visit at the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) a five - storied wonder with a spectacular pyramidal facade and overhanging windows with latticed screens, domes and spires. After looking around, set off for a late afternoon stroll through the hubbub of ancient Johari Bazaar. Rickshaws, cows, bejeweled women, and men with shockingly pink turbans pass by as you soak up spice aromas and vibrant street life.
Sure to be a highlight of the day is the time you spend with a local family learning how to make kites. Kite flying is extremely popular in India, which explains the prevalence of kites throughout the bazaar. Your new friends will show you the ropes, helping you construct your own kite out of colorful paper or silks and thin bamboo.
